Why Should I Learn to Speak in Public?
Most people will need to learn to speak in public at some point in their lives. Of course, many careers require public speaking daily, and not just motivational speakers! Sales, marketing, public relations, project management, and business management are all fields where public speaking skills are utilized every single day on the job. However, most other career paths will at some point lead to a public speaking opportunity or even necessity. Some public speaking occasions that almost everyone runs into at some point include:
● Internal presentations: Whether you're pitching a new idea to your team, preparing to ask your boss for a promotion, or interviewing for a new position, you need public speaking skills to do it.
● Educational presentations: In virtually every industry, there is a pattern: the older, more experienced staff and professionals teach the younger, less experienced staff and professionals. Whether you work in a factory, an office building, or outdoors, you will highly likely one day find yourself in this position. Learning to impart knowledge to the next generation of workers, builders, innovators, and creators is a must-have skill by - and often before - the second half of your career.
● Personal presentations: In daily life, we give mini-presentations to our neighbors, spouses, or children on a variety of topics. We may be speaking before the school board to fight an unfair rule, pitching our ideal vacation destination to our life partner, teaching our children to say no to drugs or stand up to bullies, or giving advice to our best friend after a life-changing event. These are all forms of public speaking and learning to do them well is a skill we must all develop.
